Career Coaching
Everyone can make a difference! Each of us has experience and knowledge that can contribute to the inspiration and inclusion of more women and girls in the pursuit of science and engineering careers!
According to the National Center For Women & Information Technology [NCWIT], from the year 2003 the percentage of women employed in computing and mathematical occupations consistently hovered at about 25 percent since 2007 to 2020 even though the population of women in the professional workforce was more than 50%.
There is an observed trend that we see where for many computing sub-fields women are often being clustered in execution rather than core creative technical roles. Operations Research Analysts historically have had the highest percentage of women (43 % in 2019), and computer hardware engineers have consistently had the smallest proportion of women. In 2019, computer software engineers and computer programmers had the lowest proportion of women (19% and 20%).
Women In Technology Population
In 2021, the % still remained at a declining 26% [15 %Caucasian women, 6% Asian women, 3% African American women, 2% Hispanic women]
Women In Tech Patenting
The Percentage of patents with at least one female inventor (1980 – 2010)is approximately 13% of U.S invented IT patents. This reflects an increase from the previous report (1980-2005) when about 9% of U.S.-invented IT patents had at least one female inventor.
What if women in tech could collaborate with advocates & allies?
i) Men are often the leaders, power holders, and gatekeepers in the computing workplace. Enlisting men’s participation is vital for change efforts to be truly effective.
ii) Women report that support and encouragement to pursue and persist in technical careers often comes from men. Given this fact, men already play a significant role in improving conditions for women in technology and computing.
iii) Gender reform is not a women’s issue; it is also about men. We often act as though gender is only relevant when it comes to women, but men are also gendered beings. Like women, they experience pressures to live up to certain gender norms. Women and men need to work together as allies in order to change work cultures that prevent all of us from realizing our full potential.
